Employment Terms: Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Position reports to County Board through Road and Bridge Committee.

Summary:
Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and manages through subordinate supervisor and staff, the varied activities of the County Highway Department consisting of highway and bridge design, construction, maintenance, signing, subdivision plan review, vehicle and equipment maintenance and permits.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
• Must meet the statutory requirements of 605 ILCS 5/5-201
• Must be registered as a Professional Engineer disciplined in Highway and Bridge Construction, Construction Layout (or Land Surveying).
• A strong business background is required.
• Must have a civil engineering background with at least 5 years practical experience in civil and highway engineering including highway construction and maintenance experience desired.
• Experience in FHWA & State DOT Policies and Procedures.
• Knowledge of traffic operation/drainage design and maintenance/site development review.
• Computer/technology skills desired.

Entry Level Highway Maintainer

Job Title: Entry Level Highway Maintainer

I. Summary:

The Woodford County Highway Department Position in Roanoke, IL is now taking applications for the position of Entry Level Highway Maintainer. This full time position will be filled on or before Aug. 15, 2014.

Under direct supervision of the Maintenance Foreman and the day-to-day guidance of said foreman, performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of roads, bridges, and related structures and features.


II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. In the performance of duties, operates CDL Class A licensed vehicles including maintenance trucks, tractors, mowing machines, snow plows, salt spreaders as well as other equipment including compressors, jack hammers, generators and other equipment. Washes, greases and conducts minor repairs and preventive maintenance activities of these vehicles and equipment.

2. Performs labor relating to maintenance of roadways. Repairs, replaces and patches concrete, bituminous and other roadway surfaces. Loads/unloads trucks. Spreads salt, sand, gravel and asphalt. Fills in shoulder ruts. Cleans and repairs bridges. Fills pavement cracks and joints.

3. During snow and ice conditions, operates snow plows and spreads salt, sand and cinders. Promptly responds to emergency weather situations to inspect roadways and remove hazardous material/obstacles.

4. Performs labor relating to the maintenance of roadside and right-of-way. Cuts grass, weeds and brush. Flags traffic. Repairs and cleans culverts, drains, storm sewers, ditches and other drainage facilities. Cleans, repairs and erects signs. Digs post holes, sets or pulls posts. Repairs guardrails and fence. Chips, seals and cleans bridges. Plants, trims and fertilizes tress and shrubbery.

5.. Performs routine housekeeping duties at headquarters. Cleans, maintains equipment, stockpile of materials, and performs other tasks associated with the general care of headquarters. Conducts normal security measures at the maintenance site headquarters.

6.. Removes and disposes of trash, dead animals and other debris along highways.


7. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of those listed above.

III. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Qualifications Required:

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION NECESSARY FOR THE SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF THE WORK OF THIS POSITION.

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion high school.

Requires possession of a Class “A” CDL with appropriate endorsements, including air brakes. Requires one year driving experience (not necessarily CDL experience) immediately preceding appointment free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.


Requires ability to perform arduous labor; ability to lift items weighing approximately 100 pounds; ability to understand and carry out oral/written instructions; ability to maintain productive working relationships.

Ensures compliance with departmental safety rules.
